The .69 caliber ball

These lead balls were the ammunition used by the M-1848 pistol and many of the muskets in service at the time.  They were easy for the soldier to cast himself in the field.

They were loaded into the rifle after the gunpowder, then rammed into place with the cleaning rod.  Like all musket balls, they left the barrel very dirty after each shot.

Front Stock and Retaining Band

In this section you can see a close up view of the front stock and the brass retaining band.  The bottom left picture shows the stock and grain of the wood.

The two pictures on the right show the markings on the retaining band and the latch that fastens it to the stock.

Front and Rear Sights

In this section we have photographs of the front and rear sights of the M-1848 pistol.  The photo to the right shows what it was like to look through the sights of the musket.

Below you can see the brass front sight.  The bottom right photo shows many details surrounding the rear sight, the rear retaining screw that fastens the barrel to the stock.

The Pistol Grip and End Cap

The pictures in this section are close-ups of the pistol grip and brass end cap of the weapon.  The picture in the upper right shows a general view of the pistol grip, while the picture below shows the arsenal mark on the inside of the grip.

The middle right photo shows the rear of the brass end cap.  A retaining screw and the usual arsenal marking can be found here.  The final photograph in the bottom right shows the base of the end cap and another retaining screw that can be found there.
