D-30 Battery Shoot

Here we can see four guns of a D-30 firing battery in action during a training exercise.  The guns have been placed in entrenchments to protect from counter-battery fire.  Members of the gun crew can also be seen wearing 1969 pattern uniforms.  No date or location was given with this Soviet era photograph.

Instruction Period

This close up photograph shows the D-30 in the ready position being inspected by an officer and a soldier.  Two other officers stand in the background.  As with many Soviet era photographs, no date or location was given with this image.

A D-30 battery on the move

In this picture, four Ural-375 trucks can be seen towing D-30 howitzers across a field as their gun crews ride in the bed of the trucks.  During training evolutions such moves would occur while the remaining batteries remained in place so that they could providing cover fire and engage the enemy.  The battalion level Fire Direction Control center would coordinate their fires during the move.  This enabled the firing battery on the move to set up at a more advantageous location in relative safety.  Upon completion of the move, the battery could begin firing against the target so that another firing battery could move, thereby enabling the advance to continue without sacrificing firepower.
