The M-91/30 Sniper Rifle
in pictures

This section has many high detail pictures of the M-91/30 sniper rifle. Virtually every part of the weapon and its scope has been photographed and described. To go to a specific part of the weapon simply click on the desired section below. I should warn you that some of these pages may take a little while to load.

Front Handguard and Bayonet Attachment

The M-91/30 sniper rifle has a stock made of solid birch wood that is usually varnished.  Those refurbished in the late 40's often have laminated birch stocks.  The top right picture shows the front hand guard of the rifle and the forward part of the stock.  Also visible are the retaining bands and sling.  The bands are kept in place by metal springs in the stock.

The bottom two pictures illustrate how the weapon is fitted with the M-91/30 bayonet.

Buttplate and Rear Stock

The two pictures below are of the rear of the rifle.  The first picture shows the placement of the rear sling slot, while the second gives some idea as to what the butt plate looks like (and the screw that fastens it to the stock).

The Receiver

The receiver is the heart of any firearm and this rifle is no exception.  In fact, it is the most interesting part of the weapon.  The top picture shows the scope attached to the receiver.  The bottom two show the weapon with the bolt forward and when pulled to the rear.  The stripper clip guides can be seen in these pictures.

The Magazine and Trigger

Aside from the scope, the five round magazine and trigger assembly is one of any Mosin-Nagant's most easily recognizable features.

The magazine can be easily opened by using any simple flat tool (like the M91/30's bayonet or the tool out of the cleaning kit).  It contains a simple leaf spring which can be easily removed when the magazine is opened to clean or remove ammunition.

Stripper clips cannot be used to load with weapon when the scope is in place.  The rounds must be loaded individually.

The PU Scope Mount

The mount for the PU scope can be seen in this set of pictures.  The scope is removed from the mount by turning the screw at the back of the mount.

To replace the scope, it is inserted over the knob in the front bracket of the scope, then levered back into place.  The rear screw is then tightened which secures the scope in place.
