Russian Weapons Systems
The Age of Transition
(1879-1899)

The late 1800's was a very interesting time to be a weapons designer.  The reason for this was that most nations of the day sought to replace their single shot black powder rifles with something more modern. The development of the magazine fed rifle, the stripper clip, and smokeless powder changed the face of weapons development - at least until the era of the sub-machine gun and assault rifle.

In this section we will discuss the weapons that Czarist Russia chose to arm their forces with for the new century. Weapons designed by Emil Nagant and S. I. Mosin. Together these two men created weapons that in one form or another would have an impact on the history of Russia for over fifty years.
