Guided Missile Destroyer in Pictures

This section is dedicated to pictures of the 'Sovremenny' Class guided missile destroyer.  Our pictures are all authentic and were taken at some time when the ship was in active service, and usually by the United States navy.  We will add more photographs as they are acquired, but until then, will do our best with what we have.

Escorting a Soviet merchant ship

In this picture you can see the Internatsional Mertkr class tanker 'Zavety Ilicha' being escorted by the Sovremenny class cruiser 'Osmotritelnyy'.  You can see how small the Sovremenny is in comparison to the commercial ship.  It was taken by the US Navy on 21 August 1988.

The 'Stoikiy' at Sea

Here we have a picture of the Sovremenny class destroyer number 719 at sea.  The ship is named the 'Stoikiy'.  In this picture was taken by the US Navy on 17 January 1990, but no location was given.

A Composite Picture of the 'Osmotritelny'

Here we have a series of pictures of Sovremenny class destroyer number 780, also known as the 'Osmotritelny'.  In these pictures you can see many of the weapons systems and electronic sensors.  You may also notice that the pictures do not fit together exactly.  This is because both the ship and the aircraft taking the pictures were moving as the series was being shot.  These pictures were taken by the US Navy in June of 1986, but no location was given.
