Paratrooper Private

The Soldier is Wearing:
The in this picture is wearing a VDV (paratrooper) uniform.  It is the everyday and field utility uniform worn by all enlisted paratroopers.  The uniform is identical to that worn by the infantry, except it is worn with the collar opened so that the striped telnyashka can be seen.

Worn with this uniform are the soldier's decorations.  He wears a Guards badge, a Paratrooper Jump Qualification Badge, and a Soldier Sportsman 1st class pin.  These can be seen in greater detail below.

The enlisted M-68 pattern field uniform:

The changes of 1968 brought many new uniforms to the armed forces and the paratroopers were no exception.  Their new uniform blended elements of the army and air force to create something uniquely their own.

The tunic and trousers were identical to those worn by army servicemen, but because to the elite status of the paratroopers it was decided that the tunic was to be worn with the collar open.  In this way the distinctive striped VDV telnyashka could be seen.  Their shoulder boards and collar tabs came directly from the air force, but the tabs were unique to the VDV.

Another unique VDV item was the light blue beret, which replaced the earlier maroon version.  On the side the beret had a red flash with the VDV insignia on it.  The badge worn on the beret was the same as the army enlisted cap badge.

To the right you can see the three badges that this particular soldier has earned.  They are (from right to left) the Guards Badge, the Paratrooper Qualification Badge, and the Soldier Sportsman 1st Class Badge.

This uniform was the standard everyday/field uniform for all enlisted members of the VDV.  It was eventually replaced in 1981 by a six pocket khaki uniform.
