MVD & Border Guard Rank Shoulder Boards of the Soviet Superpower
(1968-1991)

During the late 1960's, the various internal security forces of the Soviet Union chose to follow the army's lead in rank shoulder boards.  The primary differences were in the color of the boards and the letters that were written on them.  The border guards were to use green, KGB used royal blue, and the MVD were to use maroon boards.

In this section are displayed the common everyday shoulder boards worn by MVD and Border Guard personnel. We will eventually cover every rank from Colonel-General to Private soldier, but for now we have only a few.  In the future Enlisted shoulder boards will be added, as will examples of Parade and Greatcoat boards worn by officers.

Warrant Officers

An interesting note about warrant officers is that this rank was not originally included in the 1968 reforms. It was later added in 1971 to provide career senior enlisted men with a means of advancement.  We have not seen warrant officer boards for the KGB or KGB border guards yet, and are not sure they even exist.  If they do, we will add them here in the near future.
