Kotlin / SAM Kotlin
Class Destroyers in Pictures

Kotlin number 758 on 21 October 1980

This section is dedicated to pictures of the 'Kotlin' Class destroyers.  The pictures are all authentic and were taken by the US Navy during the Cold War at some time when the ship was in active service.  Descriptions will be given with each picture so that a greater understanding of the Kotlin family of destroyers can be gained.  More photographs will be added as they are obtained.

The SAM Kotlin

This picture shows the 'Nastiychivy' SAM Kotlin destroyer at sea sometime in 1975.

The twin SA-N-1 anti-aircraft missile launcher is clearly visible on the upper rear deck.

Modified Kotlin in the Mediterranean

This picture was taken by the US Navy near the island of Crete on 16 October 1973.  The modified Kotlin was observing the carrier USS Independence (CV-62) as it was transiting the area.

The SAM Kotlin 'Skritnyy' at sea

This picture shows SAM Kotlin number 722, also known as the 'Skritnyy' as it cruises the seas.  By looking closely at the two small 30mm gun turrets you can see exactly where on the ship the picture below was taken.  This picture was taken by the US Navy on November 30, but it did not list which year nor give a location.

The Cold War Thaws

In February of 1973 sailors of US Navy ships visiting  Massawa, Ethiopia were invited to come aboard the Soviet SAM Kotlin Class destroyer 'Skritnyy' which was in the area at the time.  This is one picture of that visit as a US Navy petty officer takes some time to talk to a Soviet Navy officer.

Behind them one of the Kotlin's twin 30mm gun turrets can be seen.  The gun is designated the AK-230 by the Soviets and was first introduced in 1960.

It can use either the 'Drum Tilt' radar or an optical system.  It has a 3000 meter effective and 5000 meter range air targets.  Range is less against surface targets.  Its practical rate of fire is 240 rounds/minute.

Another view of a Kotlin

This picture, taken by the US Navy on 21 June 1978, shows Kotlin number 430 at sea.  The photograph has been artificially brightened as it was very dark and had poor contrast.  This way many otherwise invisible details have been made visible.

A rear quarter view of a Kotlin

Here we have an excellent picture of Kotlin 029.  In it you can see most major weapon and sensor systems.  It was taken by the US Navy on 29 August 1979 and did not list a location in its description.
