Selected Civilian and Political
Items from Russia during the Early Cold War
(1946-1959)

No discussion about a nations military can be complete without showing the civilian life of the time. This is because no military exists in a vacuum, it is a product of its times. This section will try to give the reader a glimpse of what life was like during the era. It will feature pictures, history, stories, and other facets of Soviet civilian life during the period between 1946 and 1959.

1947 One Rouble Banknote

Here you can see both sides of a post-war Soviet banknote.

1949 issues of the Izvestia newspaper

Here are three issues of the Izvestia newspaper printed in 1949.  The one on the top right was printed on 17 July, the paper on the bottom right was printed on 19 July, and the paper directly below was printed on 24 July.

Each of the papers are made up of two large folded sheets.  All feature pictures of Stalin and have articles about the Red Navy which I have not translated at this time.

There are also small stamps on each of the papers which signify that they have been approved for distribution by the Communist Party authorities.

Soviet Stamps of 1946

Here is a selection of Soviet stamps that  commemorate the 25th anniversary of the forming of the Soviet Union.  They are 15 (below), 30 (bottom right), and 60 (right) kopeks each.

Civilian Drivers License

Here we have two civilian drivers license cards.  Both are from 1956.  We will attempt to obtain a translation of them in the future.  The front cover of the booklet is on the right.  If you look carefully you can make out the shape of a car and areas where some writing was stamped.
