The M-44 Carbine in Pictures

This section has many high detail pictures of the M-44 carbine. Virtually every part of the weapon is photographed and described. To go to a specific part of the weapon simply click on the desired section below. I should warn you that some of these pages may take a little while to load.

Barrel Bands and Front Stock

Much like the M-38, the M-44 carbine has a stock made of solid birch wood that is usually varnished.  Those refurbished in the late 40's often have laminated birch stocks.

The upper hand guard, the nose cap on it, and the barrel bands are all identical to those on the M-38 carbine.  The stock is almost the same, but has a small cut in them so that the tip of the bayonet can fold properly.

The bottom picture shows the underside of the weapon (cleaning rod, barrel bands, etc).

Buttplate and Rear Stock

The butt plate and rear stock of the M-44 were identical to that to the M-38 Carbine.  For this reason (and to save web space) we have decided to use pictures from the M-38 rifle in our collection.  Neither of our M-44's have the electro-penciled markings that our M-38 possesses.  The first picture shows the placement of the rear sling slot, while the second gives some idea as to what the butt plate looked like (and the screw that fastened it to the stock).

The Receiver

The receiver is the central part of every firearm.  This is where the round is chambered and where the bolt acts on the rounds.  The receive of the M-44 is totally identical to that of the M-38 carbine.

The second picture shows a stripper clip in the loading position.  From here, the rounds would be pushed into the magazine well and the weapon would be ready for battle.

The pictures at the bottom of this section show the many different markings that can be found on the receivers of two different years of M-44.  Both were made in Izhevsk near the end of the Great Patriotic War.

The Magazine and Trigger

The five round magazine is one of a Mosin-Nagant's  most easily recognizable features.  It can be easily opened by using any simple flat tool (like the M91/30's bayonet or the tool out of the cleaning kit).  It contains a simple leaf spring which can be easily removed when the magazine is opened to clean or remove ammunition.

These parts of the M-44 Carbine are totally identical to those on the M-38 Carbines.
