Army Shoulder Boards
of the 1943 Pattern

 

 
The 1943 pattern pogoni (shoulder boards) were created in 1942 after much debate about how to boost morale and draw upon  Russian military tradition and patriotism.  These insignia were very similar in design to those used in the last days of Czarist Russia.  The new pattern was approved by the Commissariat of Defense on 15 January 1943 in a document known as Prikaz 25.

In this section we will display the shoulder boards worn by army personnel. They will eventually cover every rank of the Red Army, but for now we will work with what we have.

Branch of Service Colors

The 1943 pattern pogoni (shoulderboards) were made in different colors to differentiate members of each branch of the Red Army.  Purple was the color of the infantry, red signified artillery, and blue was used for the air force.  The different branch of service colors used on field shoulder boards are shown below.

General Officers

The shoulder boards of Soviet Marshals and Generals are to be placed in this section as they are obtained.  Most of these ranks had been in existence since 1940, but the ranks of Marshal and Senior Marshal were introduced on 4 February 1943.

The shoulderboards (pogoni) of senior officers will be featured here in this section.  The ranks of Colonel and Major had been in existence since 1940.  The rank of Lieutenant-Colonel was later added in 26 July 1943.
