The M-1881 Shashka

This section has many high detail pictures of the M-1881 Shashka that we have in our collection.  Virtually every part of the weapon and scabbard is photographed and described.  To go to a specific part of the weapon simply click on the desired section below. I should warn you that this pages can take some time to load due to its high graphics content.

 

The Handguard

Both sides of the the M-1881 handguard are shown here.  It is made of brass and painted wood.  The base of the sword can be seen at right.

In the picture below you can see the production markings - 1888 - which tell when the weapon was made.  The picture on the bottom right has the manufacturer and regimental numbers.

 

Close-ups of Markings

This section details the markings that can be found on either side of the swords handguard and at the base of the blade.  The picture on the lower left shows several imperial stampings as well as the year of manufacture.  The picture on the lower right has the maker's mark and the regiment that the weapon was made for - in this case the 46th Regiment.  Other quality control marks can also be seen on this side of the blade.

 

The Sword Blade

Here are two pictures of the blade of the M1881 Shashka.  The first shows the tip of the sword, while the second shows the details at the base of the blade.

 

The Scabbard

Here are a few detail pictures of the scabbard of the M1881 Shashka.  These pictures show where the sword hanger was fitted to the scabbard, as well as the texture of the scabbard covering.

    

The Scabbard Tip

Here are a few pictures of the end of the scabbard.  The photo to the right shows some markings.  We do not know the purpose of these marks.

The two pictures below are of both sides of the scabbard tip.  They show the brass end cap and  fastening pin that holds it together.
