The M-1856 Bayonet

The M-1856 bayonet was designed to be used with the M-1856 Jaeger percussion musket.  In later years it was adopted for use with the M-1858 Percussion Infantry Rifle, the M-1867 Karle Rifle, and finally with the M-1856/69 Krnka Rifle.

 

The Locking Ring

Here are two views of the locking ring system that was used to fasten the bayonet to the rifle.  Such systems were common during the early 19th century.  The three step slot and ring can be seen below.

 

The Bayonet Tip

Like its predecessors, the tip of the M-1856 bayonet tapers down to a sharp point.  Also visible here are the two fullers on the outer side of the blade.  The inner side of the blade is flat.

 

Bayonet Markings

Several factory markings can be found on M-1856 bayonets.  The bottom left picture shows a Cyrillic letter 'P' in a circle and the letters KH beside it.  The picture on the bottom right shows the mostly illegible regimental number (probably the number 10) and the serial number of the bayonet - 1201.
